It was with bated breath that we watched Julian Assange step foot on Australian soil after 14 years of isolation, incarceration, and political persecution. The moments we shared with you on Wednesday the 26th of June were moving, profound, and life changing. Today, just one week later, Julian is able to celebrate his birthday with his close family and friends.
The supporters of this campaign and Julian’s freedom are some of the most incredible, resourceful, and committed individuals any campaign could ever have. Without your help and constant mobilisation, Julian would not have been freed. You have remained resolute in your devotion to justice, and we celebrate this win with each and every one of you. Thanks to you, Julian is also able to pay the $520,000 debt to the Australian government for the plane it chartered.
We pay tribute to every single one of you and to our dedicated team behind the scenes who never stopped working towards this goal. As Julian himself said, “You can’t do anything significant in life without a fight.” This was the biggest fight for justice in a generation.
We won this epic battle together, and you freed Julian. As Stella has tweeted: “Julian Assange is free from prison but the fight for his freedom (and ours!) continues. The actions against him do not just have a chilling effect—they have a freezing effect. We will continue to work to secure greater freedom for Julian and justice for the many abuses against him that chill others.” Stay tuned, but before we embark on the next chapter, now is the time for Julian to be with his family, to recover, to heal, and to begin the long road to recovery. The campaign will take a moment to rest and reflect on what this new world looks like.
